Hafiz Muneeb (c. 1991 - c. August 15, 2010) and Hafiz Mugheez (c. 1994 - c. August 15, 2010) were two teenage brothers who were the victims of a public mob lynching in Sialkot, Pakistan that resulted in their death. The incident was widely recorded by onlookers on cellphones and cameras among a herd of people who were beating the brothers with batons, bricks and stones. Their bodies were then hung upside down to a tank in the middle of a busy street.
Footage excerpts were widely shown on local Pakistani channels a few days after the incident occured. The actual crime of the two brothers is still reported as unclear among various sources. Geo News reported the incident as a result of a cricket match quarrel among friends while another news agency described the brothers as robbers.
At the early morning of 15th August 2010, the two brothers (both Hafiz) set of on their motorbike to play a cricket match. whilst on their journey, were distracted by a group of people who were looking for robbers who open fired on two people. The two brothers were wrongly accused of robbery, and without a fair trial, the police let angry mob of people kill the two innocent brothers.
Police were present during the beating, which lead to the death of the brothers.
Two brothers were murdered savagely during the holy month of Ramadan. At the time of their death, both brothers were fasting whilst beaten to death viciously.
The involvement of the local police precinct has been widely criticized and also blamed for the death of two innocent brothers. Presence of at least eight constables as well as two high police officials were circled on amateur video recordings who were a part of the crowd watching the incident.
The brothers are known as martyrs today.
